Grove Airfield Urban Extension

The practice is currently working for Persimmon Homes on the masterplan for a major urban extension to Grove in Oxfordshire. The site is an old WW2 airfield that will eventually house some 2500 dwellings and include a new centre, schools, parks and a mix of uses.

The masterplan has emerged through extensive consultation with stakeholders, residents and Councils. The plan reflects the historic remnants of the old airfield and earlier agricultural holdings. It also promotes a layout that takes advantage of orientation to maximise solar benefits. Integration with the existing village and the productive use of a strategic gap between the site and Wantage have also helped shape the plan. A close working relationship with Vale of White Horse District Council has ensured that the plan responds to local aspirations. A recent CABE Design Review Panel found:

"much to admire in the evolving masterplan for the former Grove Airfield. We think that several strong design concepts have been established. We are particularly impressed by the efforts made to pick up traces left by the historic uses of the site to give character and meaning to this proposed new residential development."
